Reflecting on his experience leading technology efforts in both startups and large corporations, Dheerender highlights the stark contrasts between the two environments. “Large corporations have legacy systems, established processes, and hierarchical decision-making, which often slows down innovation but provides stability and resources. On the other hand, startups thrive on speed and agility, allowing rapid experimentation but leaving little room for error due to resource constraints. Success lies in leveraging the strengths of each environment—startups for rapid creation and corporations for scaling effectively,” he explains.

Staying current with emerging technologies is critical in a career spanning diverse domains. “Continuous learning is the only way to keep up. I dedicate time to reading industry publications, attending tech conferences, and maintaining strong connections with peers and mentors. Being hands-on in the initial stages of projects helps me personally understand new challenges and opportunities,” Dheerender shares. He also emphasizes the role of empowering team members to specialize in areas of expertise, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing within his teams.

Dheerender’s expertise in data governance and architecture is particularly notable. He stresses the importance of defining clear frameworks for data governance. “At InStride, we developed robust protocols for access and security, ensuring data privacy while automating validation processes for better decision-making. Additionally, scalable architectures with event-driven designs enable real-time data processing and seamless integrations,” he notes.

When asked about best practices for developing integration solutions, Dheerender points to flexibility and standardization. “Designing loosely coupled systems allows for easier maintenance and scalability. At DocuSign, we built a platform using message queues and caching to handle high transaction volumes efficiently. Comprehensive monitoring and logging mechanisms also play a vital role in maintaining system reliability.”

One of Dheerender’s career highlights includes leading the development of Walmart’s Scan & Go mobile app, where he prioritized user-centric design and strategic marketing. “We relied heavily on user feedback to refine the interface and ensure seamless integration with back-end systems. A/B testing helped us customize features based on user behaviour, while targeted in-store promotions drove adoption and engagement,” he recalls.

Building global development centers is another area where Dheerender has left a significant mark. “Choosing the right location is key. For instance, Costa Rica offered a strong talent pool at cost-effective rates. Beyond location, fostering a team culture that balances company values with local nuances is essential,” he explains.

Looking ahead, Dheerender is particularly excited about emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, and blockchain. “AI-driven tools like natural language processing and predictive analytics will redefine how companies interact with clients. Blockchain, on the other hand, has the potential to enhance security and transparency in digital transactions. Incorporating these innovations will be central to my future projects,” he says.
