Income Tax Filing 2019: Check your income tax refund status

Update: 2019-08-10 15:09 IST

If you have already submitted the income tax return (ITR) and have paid more taxes than you are due; then you are eligible to receive a refund. Although you may not have paid the advance, even when you earn income from your salary or bank interest, etc., the tax might have already been deducted at the source (TDS).

After filing the ITR, if you find that more taxes were deducted than what was due, you can claim a tax refund. Once you file your ITR, you have verified it; the income tax refund will automatically be due if the excess tax was deducted.

Once the income tax department processes the ITR and the tax refund claim is accepted, the amount owed is credited directly to your bank account. However, to obtain a tax refund, ensure that your bank account is linked to the PAN card.

Check Tax Refund Status

You need to log in to the e-filing website of the income tax department with your user ID and password. Then you must click on 'View Returns and Forms' on the display page. Select 'Income Tax Returns' from the drop-down menu and then select the last year of evaluation after which the tax refund status get displayed.

In case the I-T website shows a "refund paid" status and the money has not been credited to your bank account. You can contact your bank or SBI that processes all refund claims. You can also contact the income tax department.

In the 2019 interim budget 2019, Piyush Goyal the then finance minister had announced that tax assessment would be done within 24 hours and those who aren't under scrutiny will get income tax refunds within the day itself.
