Wild elephant kills two women in Sitampeta agency
Srikakulam: Wild elephants killed two women at Manda village in Sitampeta mandal. Four elephants have been moving around in Sitampeta agency for the last four years and damaging crops. According to forest officials, MV Somasekar and N Tirupati Rao and police officials, the deceased women were identified as Savara Podamma (72) ofManda village and Savara Gayyaramma (65) of Eethamanuguda village.
An elephant which was injured due to electric shock four days ago lost mental balance and acting more violentl. It attacked the two women while they were working in their fields. Both the injured women died at the RIMS hospital in Srikakulam while undergoing treatment.
On learning about it Sitampeta ITDA PO, L ShivaSankar, District Forest Officer, Ch Shanti Swaroop, Palakonda division police officials rushed to spot and inquired about the incident on Tuesday. Tribal union leaders and representatives Buditi Appala naidu, Biddika Appa Rao, Pattika Kumar, Pattika Sambayya, Pattika Tirupati Rao, Savaratota Mukhalingam on Tuseday demanded Rs 15 lakh compensation for each deceased family members.
Responding over the incident, District Collector J Nivas explained that they will find out permanent solution for elephant menace in the Srikakulam agency. In a span of 12 years since from 2007, wild elephants killed 14 persons in Srikakulam agency.
