Visakhapatnam: As messages started trickling in on the social media platforms from the early hours of Friday welcoming the police encounter against the four accused in the rape-murder case of Hyderabad veterinarian 'Disha', many took to streets to express their happiness over the move.

Just a few days ago, the same force drew flak for turning away the complaint made by Disha's parents, citing the reason of the jurisdiction. However, on Friday, it was a different scene altogether.

The city painted a jubilant atmosphere as the topic topped the charts in every social gathering, organisation and institution. Students, activists and women gathered at different places, shared sweets and burst crackers, hailing the swift action taken by the police.

As the father of a girl child, Tourism Minister M Srinivasa Rao expressed solidarity with the alleged encounter. "Punishment for such heinous crime in Gulf countries sends a chill down the spine to the perpetrators. There is a need to amend the existing laws and strengthen gender sensitisation among people," said the Tourism Minister.

Participating in the rally near GVMC office, former MLA and BJP leader Vishnu Kumar Raju and MLC P V N Madhav hailed the swift action taken by the police on Disha's case. Carrying posters, students and activists distributed sweets on the occasion.

At Alluri Seethammarama Raju statue, Seethammadhara, women, children and activists met to express their happiness over the action taken against the accused. "Though we are glad that the four accused were shot dead in the same spot where Disha's body was burnt, it would have been better if all the accused were also burnt like the victim," shared a few students.
