Vijayawada: Village volunteers to help curb crimes against women

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Mahila Commission chairperson Vasireddy Padma said the commission would utilise services of village volunteers and village secretariats to fight crime against women in the state. Stating that Andhra Pradesh was tops in crime against women, she underlined the need to check it. Addressing a media conference in a hotel here on Thursday, Padma said the Mahila Commission would conduct detailed study on crime against the women to formulate suitable policies as well as creating awareness on preventing crime. She stressed the need to change the culture including teaching children to respect women.

She said Mahila Commission was not against the men and had been working to help the womenfolk and rendering assistance to the government. Padma thanked Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy for appointing her as the chairperson of the Mahila commission.

She said social media would be used to create awareness among women on various issues and added that complaints from the women would be received online along through other means.

She lamented that still discrimination against women was continuing in society in the age of Chandrayaan-2 and felt the need for change in the perspective of society.
