Steep hike in onion price leads to heavy rush at Rythu Bazaar in Chittoor

Chittoor: The price of onions in open market crossed above Rs.120 per kg in an unpredictable way. The government has been distributing the onions at a subsidised price for Rs.25 per kg through Rythu bazaars.

Accordingly, District Collector N B Guptha has instructed the authorities of Rythu Bazaars in the district to supply the onions at subsidised price until the demand for onions come down. So far 175 tonnes of onion stocks were sold in Chittoor and Tirupati Rythu Bazaars, according to officials information .

Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday , Chittoor Rythu Bazaar Estate Officer Md Akthar said that there was heavy demand for the subsidised onions. " Apart from the customers of Chittoor district, people from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were also coming to Chittoor to get subsidised onions which indicates the intensity of the demand for onions,'' he added.

Earlier , in order to regulate the serpentine queues of customers at Rythu Bazaar, the SP has been deploying the police force during the last few days. Later, distribution of onions was shifted to Agricultural Market yard from Rythu Bazaar to facilitate all the customers to get the onions in separate queues .

Md.Akthar said that the employees of Chittoor Market Committee were extending cooperation in the distribution of onions . Mean while Chittoor Marketing Committee Assistant Director P.Gopi visited Chittoor Rythu Bazar on Tuesday to assess the demand for onions .
