Kakinada: Lack of sufficient number of veterinary assistant surgeons is affecting the animal birth control (ABC) for starry dogs in Kakinada city, said Kakinada corporation health officer Dr Prasanth.

It may be mentioned that the ABC for stray dogs commenced a week ago after pending for last two years. The municipal authorities identified about 6000 stray dogs in the city where as consumer and citizen welfare associations claim the number double to this. With dog bites and stray dog menace on the rise, the municipal administration has taken a decision and implementing the same.

Commenting on slow paced ABC, Dr Prasanth said that the veterinary department deputed three assistant surgeons to attend to all these stray dog surgeries. "With six working days in a week, we could complete maximum eight surgeries per day. In case of bull dogs the number of surgeries per day is coming up to 8 where as for female dogs the number per day is coming to three only," he said.
