Sensitise children on cleanliness drive in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: Children play a key role in becoming change agents and inspire others in the community, GVMC Commissioner G Srijana said on Wednesday.

She was addressing a gathering at a programme organised by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), Plan India and Grama Swarajya Samithi (GSS) as part of their three-year-long partnership in taking forward the Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya campaign in State-run schools.

The- three-year-long Urban WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) – Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya project aimed at promoting sanitation, economical use of water and sensitise school children on maintaining hygiene, among others.

As part of the project, the GSS members said that scores of schoolchildren gained access to potable water, safe sanitation, among other amenities.

USAID senior advisor Anand Rudra said that clean sanitation was a right and should be accessible for all irrespective of their economic conditions.

Senior programme manager of Plan India said there was a 15 per cent increase in the school enrollment among girls in 20 schools where the project was taken up.
