Srikakulam: A large number of people queued for onions in Rythu Bazaar here on Tuesday. They are in great demand in the backdrop of high price in the open market. In the open market, the price of onion touched Rs 50 a kg.

To provide onions at reasonable price to customers, district administration opened counters at Rythu Bazzars here and other towns in the district. The price of onion is fixed Rs 25 a kg in Rythu Bazaars. So far, as much as 10 tonnes of onions had been procured from Kurnool market and sold from Saturday to Tuesday at Rythu Bazaars in Srikakulam city, Amudalavalasa and Kotabommali.

Another 5 tonnes of onions would reach to Srikakulam by Wednesday morning. "We have fixed price as Rs 25 per kg andsold only to white ration cardholders. Each cardholder was given one kg of onion," said Assistant Director for Marketing B Srinivasa Rao.

Due to two-day holiday in Kurnool market, the officials made effort to procure onion from Nasik market in Maharashtra State to meet the demand. elaborated.
