Devotees immersing a Ganesh idol at Vinayaka ghat in Kurnool on Tuesday

Kurnool: The immersion of Ganesh idols passed off peacefully in the city on Tuesday without any untoward incident taking place. Three days ago, the idols installed in Nandyal and Adoni towns were immersed.

Prior to the beginning of immersion, MLAs Hafeez Khan and Katasani Rambhupal Reddy, Rajya Sabha member TG Venkatesh, MLC KE Prabhakar, Joint Collector P Ravi Subhash and SP Dr K Fakkeerappa have participated in prayers held for Ganesh idol installed at Rambotla temple in I Town.

Later, the procession of idols started towards immersion ghat. The I Town being the most sensitive zone, police personnel were deployed in large number for maintenance of law and order. Around 1,500 cops were drafted for supervising security in the city.

With the unaccountable number of idols heading towards immersion, devotees tied turbans to their forehead and coloured faces have danced to the beats of drums and some others performing folklore dances like Kolattam. At the Vinayaka ghat, former Chief Minister KE Krishnamurthy, MLAs, ASP M Deepika Patil and others officially launched the idol immersion programme by lighting the lamp.

The immersion of idols continued even after midnight as they were more. The cultural programmes of the schoolchildren at Vinayaka ghat have enthralled the residents. Barring few stray incidents, Muslims observed Muharram with reverence by offering prayers at mosques and Eidgahs.
