Home Minister Sucharita to face SC status misuse case

Update: 2019-11-26 20:51 IST

Amaravati: Like Vundavalli Sridevi, YSRCP MLA from Tadepalli (SC) Assembly Constituency, another leader from the party, Mekathoti Sucharita, Home Minister is likely to land in the same Scheduled Caste row, as an NGO lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India on Tuesday. Sucharita has been representing the Assembly from Prathipadu (SC) Constituency.

Coincidentally, this case was lodged against the Home Minister on the day of Sridevi attended for an inquiry into her caste case at Guntur, on Tuesday.

Forum for Indigenous Rights - North East India, based in Assam has filed the complaint with Election Commission against Sucharita for misusing SC Status. In its complaint, it claimed that being a Christian she contested from SC reserved constituency.

An activist Dhananjay D from the Forum, informed, "We requested the Election Commission to take necessary action against Sucharita for her misuse of SC reservation. She contested 2019 Assembly General Elections on behalf of YSR Congress Party and elected as MLA. She claimed her caste as SC in the affidavit. But from a recent interview to a Telugu Youtube Channel she claimed herself as a Christian and practising Christianity."

The Forum claimed that as and when she accepted her religion like Christianity, she lost her SC Status. "Sucharita claimed herself as a Christian and believer of Jesus. As a Christian, she is not supposed to hold SC status but here, in this case, she contested from an SC Reserved Constituency by making a false claim and by suppressing the fact that she is a Christian".

Dhananjay said that clearly it comes under the misuse of SC reservations to avail political benefits. "We are very much worried about misuse of reservations which are meant for the welfare of the people of weaker sections of this society.

The Forum urged the Election Commission to disqualify the MLA.
