Call for revival of sparrow population
Visakhapatnam: On the occasion of 'World Sparrow Day' observed on Wednesday, Paryavarana Margadarshi Vaisakhi (PMV) along with Green Environment Services organised an awareness programme in the city with a slogan 'Let us strive for the revival of sparrow population.'
Programme chairman S Vijaya Kumar opined that the use of pesticides and fertilizers by farmers in crop cultivation and deforestation in modern times led to the declining population of sparrows.
Ken Foundation Society, an NGO, has given away nearly 1,000 cement-based water bowls free of cost in the last six years. The idea is to quench the thirst of birds, including sparrows.
Founder of NGO P Santosh said, "The aim of our NGO is to conserve sparrows along with other avian creatures. This year, we plan to distribute 150 water bowls in the first week of April". Hari Krishna, a member of VSPCA stated, "A bowl of water and few grains of foxtail millets, corn and sunflower seeds placed in a bowl at the backyard or balcony can be of a great help for these birds to live."
