Andhra Hospitals performs rare heart surgery on one-month-old baby

Vijayawada: The doctors in the Andhra Hospitals on Wednesday conducted a rare heart surgery on a one-month-old baby born to parents K Nagajyothi and K Pradeep Kumar, hailing from Thummalapalli village, Allavaram mandalam in East Godavari district.

The baby is born with a rare and complex heart defect called Obstructed TAPVD (Total anomalous Pulmonary Venous drainage) where impure blood after getting oxygenated in the lung goes to right side of heart instead of left. These children die within 1 or 2 months of birth without surgery.

This kid underwent a challenging corrective heart surgery at Andhra Hospitals on June 2. Post-surgery, the baby had a very stormy period in the ICU and has been given multiple drugs and other therapies to support his falling BP, treat abnormal heart rhythm and control infection in the lung.

Eventually, after 2 weeks of life saving treatments, he got better and getting discharged now. He will lead a normal life like any other child.
